I have to agree with the PPs. There are specific things about my DH that I hope my children don't inherit, but they are all minor annoyances. Over all I would be very proud to have my children take after their father - I'm proud of him after all.

I don't have a son, just a DD, but I would be proud to have her take after my DH. DH is brilliant, confident, down-to-earth, funny, hard-working, motivated, devoted to his family... I could go on and on.

Many of us here will feel this way, OP. That's why we married our DHs!

I knew dh would be a wonderful, involved father and hoped that my kids would be a lot like him. Otherwise, I wouldn't have had children with him.

I'm the PP, and my point was that if she would just like her son to be a doctor or a lawyer, but BF works as a waiter, then I wouldn't sweat that one. It's the qualities that make up someone's character that will be a big part of how they raise kids.

Why wouldn't you be proud of your son-what is it specifically about your boyfriend? I would be wary of marrying anyone who wouldn't fit that description (and I've never thought of it that way or heard that quote before).

I think it depends on which qualities you dislike for your son. Is it things like his education/earning potential? Or something that is more a part of who he is?

I'd be thinking more like, "Don't marry a man unless you think he would lovingly nurture and support your son, while setting a good example and guiding him into adulthood with strong values."

I would be so proud if my son grew up to be like his father, which is probably why I'm so happy his father is my husband.

Funny - I've said that exact thing, though I've never seen that before.

Well, all I can say is my goal for my kids is to be similar to us in values, but better. Isn't that what we all want? The easiest way to do this is for both of you to be excellent role models. So choose wisely.
