It was not just one day but the entire week had missing class insyruction. My other pet peevr is that they gave my child a evening off from school without proper notification. Many just spent the aimless hours sitting outside the school unsupervised.

Other than this, you seem really upset OP. I like the idea of a school that finds an activity that bounds them, gives a chance for school spirit and cohesion. Is your objection that it's football-related or something else? Kids have been in school for 2 months now, I think it's also an opportunity let out some steam and get a bit of a mental break from the daily grind of school.

Having graduated from a high school that had no football team, I am probably one of the few men in this country who could care less who wins the superbowl. So I understand the frustration if your child attends a football-fanatac school.

That said...I wouldn't get too upset over the loss of one day. 12 years of school, one day is pretty inconsequential. Think of it like learning about another culture. If you lived in China the school would go flip at the Chinese New Year, if you lived in New Zealand it would be all about rugby. At your town apparently it's football. Show up, cheer for the team, then get back to work the next day.

Absolutely true. It is a rite of passage an entire high school community can depend on the activity. Instead of exposing just try the experience. You might enjoy it.

Have you watched Friday Night Lights? I just did not know it was the norm around here.

My child has lost a partial day of instruction everyday this week due to some type of activity associated with Homecoming. Such as for today, there was a homecoming parade and to my angst, students were excused for rest of the day after the a.m. parade. Is this the norm for high-school? I shared my thoughts with the principal and wasn't too pleased with his answer. He stated that homecoming can set the tone for the school climate for the rest of the year. So, I gather missing valuable class instruction is a tone worth setting.
