In Maryland a Company can get one beer/wine liscence for the entire state so most chains don't bother, smaller mom and pop stores don't have multiple stores so it's worth it for them.

For the record, I've lived in several states where you could buy beer, wine, or hard liquor at any grocery store.

Sadly, no. Although there are days when I'd kill for a shot of Jack Daniels so I can make it all the way to frozen foods with two "helpers."

A pumpkin cheesecake with bourbon spiked whipped cream (food network magazine recipe).

Some independent grocers can - Sniders, Brookville Market, Chevy Chase Supermarket. I agree that there's very little rhyme or reason, and it's ridiculous.

OP,

Go to a liquor store! What are you making?

Virginia stores sell beer and wine but not hard liquor.

I grew up in New York, where grocery stores don't sell anything harder than beer.

I'm also from California and found it annoying. Especially when you need something for cooking in a recipe like bourbon, kahlua, gran marnier, etc... but there are plenty of liquor stores in DC that's for sure. Don't know which neighborhood your are in, check Yelp.

Sadly lots of places not on the east coast. Dc you need to go to a random liquor store. Montgomery is a county store, va state store.

California. I take it this is not the norm.

Where are you from where grocery stores sell hard liquor?

So I went to Giant to buy some bourbon for a recipe and discovered they don't sell hard liquor. I am from out of state and not familiar with D.C.'s laws. Can someone tell me if I have to go to a random liquor store or if other grocery stores carry bourbon?
