Me too After living in the city for almost 15 yrs, I've done just about everything else.

For the people saying Mt. Vernon- you really should to the Mt. Vernon Wine Festival. It's usually in May, but you need to buy tickets early- they sell out fast. You can picnic on the lawn or reserve a table. They open parts of the house that are usually closed off to the public and it's not as crowded. It's really a special event!

I am the OP and I lived here a couple years, moved away, came back... never went to the arboretum until recently and I agree, it's awesome. We have to go back because there's really so much to see.

I have to admit I never realized that the monuments are so much better at night - just visualizing the Korean War memorial at night sends chills up my spine. It was something to be seen in the daytime, but we'll make a point to see it at night.

Love the suggestions so far.

the arboretum is really nice. from the outside it looks dull, that's probably why you've never actually made it in. it took me 5 years of passing by before i finally stopped in. there's a fun koi pond and bonsai garden and old capitol columns and lots more. lovely! and free!

If you knew you were leaving this area soon and unlikely to return for a very long time, where would you go and what would you do?
