OP - you can also push your school into allowing your child to accelerate. He should be able to take higher grade classes for subjects if he's already mastered the concepts being taught in his current grade. You'll have to work hard to advocate for it though and you may want to consider talking to an education consultant and see what their recommendations are. You may also want to consider getting testing done by an educational psychologist so that you have documentation of your child's situation.

We have a child who did the HGC and I would second the CTY suggestion. We did CTY before the HGC and found it useful. For DC, the classes provided much deeper reading and inquiry than our preHGC school experience and also exposed DC to other peers who really loved learning and were excited to do research, presentations, etc.

If our DC hadn't been accepted to HGC, I definitely also would have encouraged DC's reading much more directly by tracking that books read matched reading level (without being overly challenging) and by discussing books extensively. A kids book group could be good for that, but tricky to find or create a group.

Why did you think your DC needed the HGC? Without disclosing too much personal info, knowing that might help us be able to make better suggestions for how to compensate.

look on the web sites for the hgc classes web pages at the various schools - a lot of these teacher/class web pages have the weekly assignments and math curricula along with worksheets or homework and you can track along with that or get a sense of the curriculum - it will require about 2 hours or web surfing through all the hgc program web pages for the 4th and 5th grade hgc classes at the centers - also you can look at other states' programs e.g. edina minnesota that have hgc programs and look at their school / class websites

I have a DC needing much advanced work than the local school can provide who was unfortunately not accepted into the HGC. DC was placed in waitpool and was not called. We appealed and did not suceed in getting DC into the HGC. Now, we need to supplement DC a lot at home.
