Subject: PE and Recess in FCPS Elementary Schools
K has PE twice a week. Recess for 20 minutes every day. But they aren't allowed to run on the playground, which is easily one of the most ridiculous rules I've ever seen.

17:47 I agree. The kids play the same thing every day because they do not have the time to think up more creative games and play them out. They don't even use the field because they say it's too far to travel back when the teacher rings the bell. What a waste of land.

I think that PE 2-3 times a week is typical, as is a 15-20 minute recess 4 days a week. Many ESs don't do recess on Monday becuase there are so few instructional hours available due to the half day.

Our local school only has recess for 15 minutes every day except Monday when there is no recess at all. It is too short of a time for the children to really play much together. I wish our school had 20 minutes like I guess some other schools do.

First and second: PE three times a week (30 min I think). Recess everyday, but maybe not on Mondays.
Kinder: PE twice a week (30 min?). Recess everyday except Monday.

Pe 2x/week and daily recess. The first grade has an incentive program to run laps so it seems like all the kids run multiple laps every day and then play.

My FCPS K-student has PE twice a week and recess every day (could be twice a day but I'd have to double check the schedule).

I know that every school doesn't have a track, but I don't know how typical it is. Our track is maintained by the PTA.

Thanks! Your school has a track? Is that typical?

I don't know how much it changes each year, but my son is in first grade and has PE three days/week and recess everyday for 20 minutes. The children are supervised by their classroom teacher during recess.
During recess, they generally play on the playground, play pick-up soccer games or run laps on the track.
Last year in K, he only had PE once/week but I think that was due to the half-day schedule, plus I know a law was passed in VA that mandated additional PE time starting this school year. Also, in K, he had recess every day but Mondays and that was due to only being in school for two hours on Mondays.

I am curious how much time is spent on recess and PE in the Fairfax County elementary schools. Does it change each year, or is it the same at least from 1st grade to 6th? How many times is PE per week? Is there a minimum recess time per day? What are the children allowed to do during recess and who watches them? Thanks for any clarification you can give.
