I think the key feature is that the items should only be there for a few days. If the weekend goes by or trash day..then the owner needs to make othe arrangements.

Same thing happened to us when we moved. One of the items was a broken desk table and it was gone in 2 hours.

Just left some kids ride on toys out this afternoon and they are gone..fewer things in the landfills..less plastic than if everyone buys new..

My neighbors are moving to NYC and downsizing. They left thousands of dollars of "stuff" on their curb with a sign that said "FREE". It was gone in 30 minutes. We put out an old sofa and coffee table and they were snatched up in a couple hours. I couldn't have cared less if no one wanted them. The trash would have picked them up the next morning if no one did.

Maybe there are people out there that can't afford Pottery Barn or Restoration Hardware. Did you ever think of that???

You're obviously too rich and classy (make that klassy with a "k") to take other peoples' junk. But there are people who aren't as rich and important as you who are grateful for free items that still work/look decent.

I don't do it myself, but have seen junk picked up quickly. Why not, if someone can use it? Then if no one picks it up, you can arrange for the appliance or bulk fee for it to get picked up. Sounds better to give it a shot, then to pay the $50 or whatever it is....

May be trash to you but others may need or want it. I love finding other people's "junk" and turning it into my treasure. Giving away a used microwave is a lot better than throwing that used microwave in the trash.

On my neighborhood listserv people post "CURB ALERT" and a lot of this stuff does go fast.

It must be an inflated ego or just laziness that has people thinking others would want their 30yr old microwave or 3 legged chair. It's just littering and an eyesore.
