My grandma always gave peanuts... Of course, we wanted candy... but at least it wasn't toothpaste.

This is what my mom did when I was growing up and the whole neighborhood talked about it.

OP here and one of our neighbors gives them to the grow ups with costumes =] We'll definitely do that!

Give candy or they'll talk about you for years!

I did Halloween pencils one year, there was a trail of them away from my house...

Yeah, we go the no-food route also. The kids are clearly still going to get PLENTY of candy from the neighbors, and frankly, most of them don't need it!!

Some options include - pennies, dimes
mini-playdoughs
fun pencils
stickers
temporary tatoos
silly bands

We did this last year and our house was the hit of the block. We could hear kids shouting to each other "Hey, they have TOYS at that house!!"

Frankly, I don't care if mommy throws it away when they get home. I hope mommy throws away most of their candy, because most kids don't need to eat a pillow case full of candy every October.

Target has tons of alternatives to candy. Almost every snack food in small treat size bags. I love it because I buy them up for lunches. I saw small pretzel bags, pirate's booty, goldfish, granola bars, chips...my kid would love any of these things (but he doesn't like chocolate -- go figure)

LOL at toothpaste! Ack, how horrible!! Considerate, but not my first choice.

Personally, I'd stick with candy.

If you're not going to do candy go with bags of chips/Goldfish. Definitely no cheap plastic crap please.

My kids got silly bands from a neighbor last year, and like that a lot.

OK so for the past 5 years I've seen kids with those bags FULL OF CANDY and there's no way they'll eat it all so we want to give out something else besides the treat size candy. What's a great idea?

Our dentist neighbor gave out trial size toothpaste with kids' size toothbrushes - while I thought it was clever I don't think the kids liked it LOL

I wanted to give out something cool... What would you like to see in your kid's bag?
