Montgomery County has the 15th largest amount of Jewish-Americans in the entire nation. It would surprise me if they didn't give the day off. I am pretty sure Howard County does, which does not have as large of a Jewish-American population as MoCo.

Actually it is the opposite..it is all about the number of teachers that would be off and need subs. It doesn't cost the school anything if kids are off...and they worry about having enough subs. But the demographic still applies.

School jurisdictions don't close for most religious holidays unless there they result in low STUDENT attendance (not teachers). The Baltimore/DC region has one of the largest Jewish populations in the nation. So it makes sense.
Schools are aware of other important holidays in other religions and try not to schedule tests or other significant events on these days, so if students are absent, they are not missing something huge.
I think that's a pretty good compromise in such a diverse area. Otherwise, school would be closed all the time. My family's Muslim, so we do experience a couple of big holidays when the kids are in school. I mention that in case someone thinks I am not sensitive to other religion's holidays, because I am. But there has to be a balance between educating our kids and being respectful of differences. I think these policies are respectful. My kids have never missed big things like school concerts, etc. And that works for us.

The reason is logistical, not religious. MCPS closes for the Jewish holidays because of the money it would cost them in substitutes to cover for the Jewish teachers who would all take off of work on those days and require paid substitutes in their places. If the breakdown of staff members changes significantly and there are large numbers of Muslim teachers, for example, taking off during Muslim holidays, MCPS will likely close on those days as well.

OP, it's ONE day. Why does everything close down on Christmas and Easter. I do not celebrate those holidays. Why should I have to not be able to send my kids to school, use a bank, go to the store etc... Give it a rest.

They close schools in NY for Columbus Day - but they don't do it here. As an Italian in Mo Co, should I be offended? Should I demand my day back?

Christians get a week off for Christmas and Easter. In fact spring break moves around each year to be aligned with Easter. Even some religious schools don't move spring break from year to year (like St Albans/NCS).
