I always try to keep this in mind when I'm cursing and frustrated stuck in some horrible traffic jam-that there may have been an accident, that people may have been injured or worse, that someone may not ever make it home from today's commute-it certainly helps put things in perspective. Running late isn't the end of the world.

I will agree that no one should be crossing the highway, BUT the DC area is soooo pedestrian unfriendly. The people who are in constant danger are all the immigrants who don't have cars and are often walking late at night to and from jobs. It makes my blood boil to see a dirt path beaten at the side of a busy road from the heavy pedestrian traffic. Build some FUCKING side walks and pedestrian over/underpasses. Tysons is the worst offender of this.

It's horrible. And I also feel bad for the driver who hit him. the pedestrian was (if not mentally ill) extrememly irresponsible to cross the highway on foot, and now the driver who hit him has to live with that on his conscience. That's terrible.

OP here. Yes, it was the height of utter foolishness to cross the road and he paid for it with his life. The article said he made it across southbound AND HOV, as well as most of northbound.

And yes, of course, it could've been much, much worse in terms of accidents and other injuries/deaths.

I guess I was shaken b/c his body was just sprawled on the road for all to see, with no major effort to shield it from the commuters. It was undignified and I felt so sorry for his family.

I'm the PP who posted about him maybe being mentally ill, but if he wasn't the PPs who posted about darwin awards aren't necessarily off the mark. He could have caused a massive pile-up resulting in many many deaths and injuries.

Ignore the trolls. They are probably the same people who think it's fine to drive like maniacs in parking lots while chatting away on cell phones without regard to human life and how fragile it is.

I'm sorry, yes, it's tragic, but WTF was someone doing trying to CROSS 395?! I mean, come on. The words "pedestrian" and "395" do not go together.

How tragic, and how sad for the driver as well as the victim.

I was going south on a bus and we were going very slowly. I didn't know why there were 10 or so cop cars so I looked and wished I hadn't. This poor man's body was just laying on the road with a sheet only covering his upper body.

Even though I didn't see it happen, I feel shaken.
