PP, if you're in Fairfax County Alexandria check out Fort Hunt Elementary.

PP, I live in the City of Alexandria and last I checked all of the elementary schools do not have a foreign language. I know this because I have spent a great deal of time researching this issue. Some schools offer a language club after school, but not even every El has that option. It is actually quite disappointing.

To the original PP -- all Alexandria elementary schools have basic, non-immersion French and Spanish programs. Both of the middle schools offer considerably more formal French, Spanish, German and Latin. GW Middle School also offers Chinese. The schools may not be perfect, but what's been posted doesn't reflect what the ACPS system actually makes available.

I live in the Cora Kelly district but would really like to send my child to a Spanish immersion program (still several years away from kindergarten, but thinking ahead). Is it possible to get into the Mt. Vernon or John Adams programs from out of district? The ACPS website seems to say that it's possible for John Adams but not Mt. Vernon. This would be very unfortunate for us, since we live within walking distance of Mt. Vernon and miles away from John Adams. Does anyone know if there's any flexibility with these rules?

Things could change some before your kid gets to school but right now because Cora Kelly is a failing school - as is Mt. Vernon and John Adams - yes you will get the choice to move to other schools. There is likely not that much competition to get into John Adams but Mt. Vernon - lots of neighborhood parents do start out there.

I also have a number of bilingual friends that pulled their kids out of the dual immersion programs after KG because they didn't feel that the teachers spoke Spanish very well. If you are very interested in having your children learn Spanish, there are a number of well-regarded Saturday programs in Arlington or they can learn German on Saturdays at the Deutsche Schule in Potomac. Move to Arlington or Fairfax for better language immersion programs.

What exactly did you find in your research that made you pull away from the immersion schools in Alexandria? Would like more info on what you found. Did the teachers not speak Spanish very well, or was their time using it restricted?

Thanks for the info about Mt. Vernon. I will definitely check it out.

I have kids in the dual language program at Mt Vernon and I have to disagree. It is a good program and the school provides a relatively rigorous academic environment. Would encourage you to tour the school and check it out for yourself. There are now 6 kinder classes in the dual language program and the new principal is very focused on beefing up the spanish literacy component. It would be worth your time to spend a morning at the school.

OP, here. Thanks for the feedback. Confirms what I was thinking, though I was hoping maybe I was wrong...Very jealous of school systems with good language programs!

The MacArthur PTA does arrange after-school French and Spanish lessons, but they're very rudimentary.

The "immersion" schools aren't good alternatives academically, I think. You're better off enrolling at Parlez-Vous in Old Town.
