What schools are you zoned for? My understanding is that many families in the big houses in Kemp Mill go private or Yeshiva.

Most of the capes in my neighborhood have four bedrooms. But they are two up two down, which might not be what OP wants.

I'm in Woodside. It's a great neighborhood, but if you can do anything between the beltway and the ICC, you can get A LOT more for your money closer to the ICC. That puts you near Olney and there are a ton of great neighborhoods out there with newer construction and much bigger houses for the price. Just compare http://www.realtor.com/realestateandhomes-search/Olney_MD/beds-4/price-100000-650000 to http://www.realtor.com/realestateandhomes-search/20910/beds-4/price-100000-650000 There are several really nice, newer neighborhoods just north of the ICC off of Georgia, although I don't know the names http://g.co/maps/b5w8h.

The Woodside area is really nice though. Other areas near the beltway to look at are Woodmoor, which is in 4 corners and is a great family neighborhood.

I live near the Forest Glen neighborhood, and I would think you could get something pretty nice for $650K in that area.

Op here. our max is $650,000, but the 20% down would deplete our savings on that amount. PP, was your experience that 20% down was required... I know mortgage standards are tightening these days. And we have a townhome that we would like to sell, but will probably need to bring $50K to the table. I'll check out what's available in Woodside and Stonegate... Thanks!

OP - what's your budget? Woodside, Woodside Park and Woodside Forest are beautiful - they are between downtown Silver Spring and Four Corners - but five bedrooms there will be $500K at an absolute minimum. I bought a 4-BR cape in Sligo Park Hills this spring - could be a 5-BR if we opened up a window in the basement - listed in the high $500s but went over $600K to beat out four other offers. I can recommend my agent if you like - she was fabulous, really knows Silver Spring and showed us at least 40 houses before we knew this was the one.

If you're looking near the ICC, you might be interested in Stonegate or Napes Manor. There are some other neighborhoods up that way, but the lots are small.

We commute, nice to be near 495 or ICC. 4-5 bedrooms, full basement, garage. Specific community names would be helpful. I detest the ugly colonial add-ons, cape cod add-ons.... also I don't like the huge homes on a small lot and can look at neighbor making dinner.
