As someone who hires lots of people, I certainly don't look at a Barnard degree as less than. I am quite impressed.

You need brains and money to attend both. Columbia is (slightly) more expensive than Barnard. Barnard's average SATs aren't that much lower than Columbia's.

I crossed Barnard off my list because it was too urban. Dorm security with buzz you in brass gates. In retrospect it wasn't so bad. But Wellesley was better for me at the time.

Don't know about the recruiting, but the schools are pretty much integrated now including housing, student activities, and classes. The Barnard Degree says "Barnard College, Columbia University" and is signed by both presidents.

Another female Columbia grad here, albeit from a fairly long time ago. My best friends from college are Barnard grads. They don't get the core curriculum classes that Columbia students get, but they get a lot of other awesome programs that we did not have access to. Barnard is a fantastic school -- very female supportive without being isolating. Your DD would be lucky to get a Barnard education. Don't listen to the haters.

I know a recent Barnard grad who describes it as the best of both worlds -- students have access to the resources of a major research university while enjoying the intimacy and feeling of community that a small liberal-arts college can offer. As the mom of 2 Columbia students, that sounds pretty darned good to me!

Wanted to go there but my father refused to pay for a school in NYC. Went to a different Seven Sisters school instead.
