I think in this area it ends up being a waste of money. Even when heated the number of months out of the year you can use the pool is pretty limited. You could get late May to mid October if you are lucky in any given year. Couple that with the fact that their are readily available neighborhood pools and public pools, its hard to convince kids not to go to those to hang out when they know all their friends will be there.

We have a shared pool house with a few other houses....technically it is not ours but we all pitch in to maintain it and even have a lifeguard.
I absolutely love having the convenience of it.

My parents are having one put in right now... I overheard them mention a figure around 40k, which was pretty shocking to me. I don't think they're even going that fancy with the pool (as far as tons of stonework, etc).

My brother put a pool in (he lives in Florida) this summer. It isn't huge, , and it isn't heated,but it does have a diving board, he said it cost 28k.

Wow. Paranoid, overprotective, or both?

I'd love a pool! Just take proper safety precautions and teach your kids the rules and how to swim.

If it takes until 12 for you to teach your child to swim, I feel bad for your kid.

We do, my daughter is two and so far she's enjoyed it.

Whether your kids love it might depend on your neighborhood. In ours, everyone goes to the neighborhood pool and those that have their own would rather be with their friends at the neighborhood pool. OTH, my cousin's neighborhood has no local, walking/biking distance pool and her kids host gatherings all the time. As far as my cousin, she loves being the host mom and having her kids hanging around at home.

We're thinking of buying a house with a pool. I grew up with a pool and loved it. We were in it all the time in the summer. Friends over all the time etc., but I was the kid loving it, not the mom providing the place for all the kids or maintaining the pool. So if you own a house with a pool, is it worth it for the kids? I'd live to provide that kind of fun to my kids growing up. TIA!
