There are assistance programs, like a PP mentioned. But there is also a large dependence on unlicensed care, relatives, and ad hoc care. The lack of reliable, affordable child care is a major reason why many low income women are unable to get out of poverty.

It is possible to find in home under $1000, because my rates do not go above that. I think it is hard enough to work and make a living to pay just for necessities and such, and leave parents worried and strapped for how they will pay daycare. It depends on providers, locations, etc. but i keep my rates low to help those parents who just cant afford to pay the high rates

as for single parents, I am not sure how they do it but I currently have one single mom and it is a struggle I know for her even with my lowered rates, but then I had another one who was making enough money to get by paying both daycare and housing and such. I guess it depends on how you spend your money each month, how you live etc.

I have also had single family parents who qualified for the assistance program in the county that helped pay for their daycare costs.

How do lower-income people afford this- infant daycare in the DC area?

We're in the Ballston area, not so far out of school, and want to make sure that we can afford childcare and working full-time.

Is it possible to find infant daycare in Ballston or DC near the Metro, in-home maybe, for under $1000 a month?? (Or, less desirable- it could be somewhere between Ballston and DC, on the Metro line?)

Centers generally are higher than in home daycares, however I have seen some in homes charge outrageously high. I have tried to keep my rates low, in order to let parents be able to earn a living, keeping their children in a safe environment and be able to afford living.

Infant care at day care centers tend to run between $1500-1800, it's insane. My recommendation would be to find a good home day care which you can use for the first three years, and then transfer your child to a day care center at 3. The tuition is a lot less for children 3 years and older. I wish we had done that instead of paying $1700/month at a day care center that had horrible staff turnover.

Some in City of Alexandria are more like the $1500 range.

sounds about right for a large center in nova...there are a few in arlington that are around 1600 most are closer to the prices you were quoted we pay 1850 for lg center in arlington

What is the range of costs for infant care in this area? I have toured two day care centers in NoVa this week. One quoted 1800 and the other 2000 per month. Is this the standard range? I really don't know what the going rate is for this sort of thing and I'm trying to fathom how I'm going to afford this!
