This is hysterical. Second only to Harvard in net working? Most difficult to get into?!? There are approximately 470 students per year which makes for about 1900 total. PP why would you answer a question you know nothing about?

LOL -- it hadn't changed much by '91, when I turned down an academic full ride after spending a recruiting weekend on campus.

I went there on a full academic scholarship but bailed after 2/3 of a year. That was in 86, so I'm sure it has changed, but --- I found it small, snobby, rich and VERY southern. I'm from the south, but I found it way too much.

Not fit for Yankees

One of my best friends went there and thrived. I almost went, but ultimately decided it was too small -- the social scene (frat parties till you drop) wasn't one I would have enjoyed for long (but I loved the ~one weekend per year that I visited from DC). The academics are demanding, the professors good, and the students generally smart and privileged. W&L always struck me as something of a mini-UVA, but a bit more extreme in all ways. For the right kid, it's absolutely fabulous -- so definitely worth visiting.

Hey 14:29 did you get a good job after graduating? Did you get into a decent law school? Like what are you doing now because of your time at W&L?

Absolutely worth a visit. Only way you can verify what others say for yourself. If nothing else, you will get to visit charming lexington and take in some history. I live in dc and went to w and l over 10 years ago. I am still very close to all of my buddies from W and L. I can't say enough about the quality of the professors and other students there. Best 4 years of my life and I'm still reaping the rewards.

W&L has changed a LOT in the last 20-30 years, so what a lot of us know about it is hopelessly out of date.

It didn't go coed until the late 1980s, so it hasn't had as long to accept women as part of the academic environment.

Very strong Greek system to the point where not many students live on campus after freshman year.

Not very many kids on financial aid.

The school is trying very hard to diversify its student body so that it isn't quite so predominantly southern, white, and wealthy (and Republican).

Visit. Talk to current students. Then let your DC decide if it is a good fit.

That's ridiculous. Anti-northern sounds like a typical baseless MD-DC stereotype of VA. Translation: It's racist and everyone has a gun. W&L draws from students from across the country. Generally acknowlegded to be one of top liberal arts colleges in the country which just happens to be in the south (like Davidson). Rated very highly by both US News and Fisk. Greek life is very strong. Lexington is very small. Strong Honor Code. Beautiful campus and facilities. Right next to VMI.
