No, they are not endangering anyone. Aggressive drivers who don't know the law and refuse to respect bikes that are lawfully riding in the road are endangering everyone.

Also, it is a multi use path, not a bike path, meaning strollers and pedestrians are also using the path.

This is whatthey say every time, on every thread but its total BS. The cyclists ARE endandgering everyone else with their selfish, showboat, weekend warrior, "I have a legal right" to ride in the middle of the road if I want attitude. The wide side path that runs along MacArthur on the way to Glen Echo is rarely used by ANYONE. Additionally, it is more than wide enough for runners, strollers and cyclists. Further, the cyclist on MacArthur RARELY resopcet any of the traffic laws: not the stop siogns, not the lights, nothing. Many, many people are getting sick and tired of these selfish and self-absorbed cyclists making the roads so dangerous for everyone. These cyclists are so intent on shoving their "right to be in the road" down everyone elses' throats that I think has become necessary to change the laws. It is time to start a petition to get bikes out of the streets and back onto bike paths!!!

'
Why don't you support the petition to create the bike lanes that Montgomery County's planning board says is needed? Is it more important that you win or that they lose?

I agree 100%! Problem is those crazed bikers will never admit to fault and always blame cars. It would amaze me to actually have a bike rider admit to the faults of other riders constantly breaking traffic laws. But you won't because they are the victims. Its ridiculous.

The right to use the road comes with an obligation to obey the lights and other traffic laws like drivers. And most of them don't. It has become even worse since people can rent bikes hourly downtown - I've seen at least 5 of these bikers this week riding with headphones, no helmets, and not obeying traffic laws.

Blame Glen Echo for the problem. Montgomery County's own analysis says that the path is no good for cyclists. Twice they have tried to fix the problem by putting in bike lanes, and Glen Echo blocked it.

In 2004-2005 Maryland created a plan to put 5 foot wide bike lanes on MacArthur Blvd, solving the problem. Guess who vetoed it? Glen Echo. That was back in 2004-2005.

In 2007, Montgomery County again tried to put in bike lanes, this time 3' lanes in a second project. ontgomery Planning Board cited as its reason: "Since MacArthur Boulevard does not have a sidewalk, the shared use path is a de facto pedestrian facility". Once again, Glen Echo got in a tizzy over it. They feel that by creating bike lanes, traffic will speed up on MacArthur.

They are only endangering people if cars don't obey the law.

You'll basically never convince them otherwise. They're fanatics.

They have a right to ride in the street. If they rode the path they would endanger pedestrians and the speed limit on the path is too low.

Do you have any idea how dangerous you make that road. I know it must be fun to dress up like Lance Armstrong and ride your bike in the road despite the fact that there is a bike path NEXT to the road. But do you ever stop to realize that, in order to avoid hitting you, cars routinely swerve into the other lane making a very, very unsafe situation for everyone. There are so many turns in the road that cars either have to swerve around you or drive 5 mph for a mile or two in order to safely get past you.
Honestly, when I'm in a car, I fear for your safety with all these cars backing up behind you and accelerating/swerving to avoid you. But, mostly, I fear that there will be a serious accident with cars swerving all over an already windy road.
Please, just use the bike path!!
