If you like the bowling idea you should look at Strike 300 Shady Grove - they have a private room. You can actually bowl in the room and have your own bar.

I have done many family type celebrations at Maggianos - it never disappoints. It is so easy - really little planning.

Well, there are many party space available for getting on rental but one always looks for best one at very low rates. There is a one company which provides the best party space as la party space. I found your thread and it is also very informative. Thanks for sharing such interesting thread.

Wine Harvest in park potomac. Was just at a private event there and it was lovely. Also very reasonable to rent out.

I love Strike Bethesda. I think the food is actually not bad (for a bowling alley!) and its lots of fun. We have had many grown-up nights out there and think it wuld be tons of fun for a 40th b-day party.

Not sure if this is the right location for you, but Maggiano's in Friendship Heights has a party room that works well for a grop that size. Perhaps another Maggiano's location nearer to your home would have the same type of facility.

Not sure about your budget, but I've planned a few political events and this has always been on my list http://www.thefrasergallery.com/rental.html for a small event. Rental is $1500. I haven't actually used them myself but know others have and liked it. It's close to metro and parking and has flexible availability. Also, the old B&O rail station is available http://www.montgomerypreservation.org/BOStation.html $475 for 5 hours. Jackie's restaurant in Silver Spring also has rental options, not sure how much it is though http://www.jackiesrestaurant.com/rent.html

Thinking about trying to put something together for DH's 40th. We live in Montgomery County, so something close-in would be ideal (Rockville, Silver Spring, etc.). I'm not looking into doing anything super fancy and a sit down dinner is not necessarily important either. I'm thinking we would end up having ~40 people maybe. Ideas??
