I second Dr. Albert Citron in Vienna. DH had a root canal there and apparently it wasn't painful- it isn't as bad in the 21st century as it was in the olden days.

PP Dr Melrod recommender
They always file for me, but he isn't in a "network" - I usually get about 50 or 60% reimbused - again, nothing about a root canal or crown is cheap and my experience with in network dentists was frightening.
To make yourself feel better, I am a horrible patient - I almost always take someone with me, I take my ipod, I have requested ice just to cool myself down and he seriously is the most calming influence of all time. His office is nice and light filled - you couldn't find a better endodontist if you are even remotely stressed. He even did mine without the rubber dam thingy because I was whining about it bugging me.

OP here. You are describing me when it comes to dentists. I am a mess and quite beside myself that I have to have a root canal.

I was a real wuss and was absolutely shocked and awed by how easy my root canal was. Dr. Pirooz Zia (endodontis) of Chevy Chase Endodontics. great chairside manner, sensitive, responsive, careful..it was a great experience.

If you're in VA, my husband just had a root canal on Monday with Dr. Citron. It's also a practice limited to endodontics.

PP here - seriously, who knew I had such passion about endodontics, but your post made me think back to how freaked out I was before my first root canal - now I literally pop into the chair and chat with Dr Melrod - just so you know, definitely see an endodontist- my longest root canal ever was 45 minutes- the average dentist who does a root canal is anywhere from 2- 4 hours because they don't have the high tech drill (they "hand" file the roots). Dr Melrod will tell you exactly how many minutes the entire procedure will take, he'll give you breaks, and his dental assistants are really nice too. If it's a front tooth, it might only take 15 minutes or so . . .

I can't for the life of me remember the endodontist I used, and I had a really tough case (back tooth, small mouth).

But it wasn't really bad at all -- the novocaine was very effective and I didn't have any pain during the procedure and not much afterwards. I think they used to be a lot worse than they are now.

So don't worry too much -- it will be fine.
