T50 is possible, T30 is not.

So maybe a 3.68 now? Better to have a 3.68 with a positive trend than a stable 3.68 or one where junior year was the worst. I'd make a realistic list for the overall average, then cross your fingers that some schools might reward him for his growth. E.g. if he's interested, the UCs don't use freshman grades for the GPA, though they're still visible on the application.

The upward trend in grades is good. Some places (Emory) don’t consider freshman year grades. There are lots of great places outside the T-50 schools. Keep an open mind and good luck!

How many APs? Is this private or public?

I’d shoot for JMU, VT, BU, UDel, Indiana/No Kelly, Penn State and some SLACs.

We get that. The question is: Why? Top 50 (or Top whatever) schools are by definition exclusive, so performing below the standards of an average admitted student puts one a a serious disadvantage.

OP needs to be realistic.

I think there’s still a shot. Schools like to see an upward trend (they like all A’s better, but if not that, they like year over year improvement). It hurts, but I don’t think it takes them out of the game.

Athlete? If not, low chances but maybe aim towards the bottom of to 50.

Zero chance. AIM lower.

DC has C- and 3.3 GPA in freshman, but did better in Sophomore and Junior years..3.85 and 3.9 in respective year. In your experience, how will this hurt admission chances in top 50 schools?
