My kid is a rising 4th grader who brought home a letter for subject specific AAP for language arts a couple of weeks ago, which we had to approve their participation in. Then today they brought home another letter saying they are being placed in advanced math for next year--doesn't seem to need our sign-off for that. What's confusing to me is that a friend's kid was offered subject specific AAP for both LA and math for next year, and had to opt-in for both. We are at a center school, and I'm assuming that the difference in the advanced math and the subject specific AAP is to do with who is placing the kids in the programs (committee vs in-school admin), but I find very confusing that there are so many differently named levels--also it seems odd that we don't sign off on the advanced math designation but do on the AAP designation.

Subject specific is just grouping within the classroom. Depends on the class dynamics what this will look like because the teachers have to try to work with the below grade level kids...
Advanced math is the same math that the full time aap kids get ( congrats)
All of the above are determined by the local school

Thanks for the explanation. It's so wild to me that the grouping within the classroom requires a permission slip and advanced math doesn't, you just get a letter saying it's going to happen.
