Don’t be dense. We are talking about a drowning in the DC area, Great Falls. Not one by Cumberland or Colonial Beach. There are not hundreds of people swimming in the great falls area.

I still remember the young man who dad trying to rescue a friend there, maybe 20 years ago.

To be fair, in that case, the signs said “no swimming.” The toddler wasn’t swimming, he was playing near the edge of the water and an alligator literally came out and dragged him in the lagoon. Not cool to victim blame a toddler.

Not near Great Falls. I've done open water swims and just no way. You should never, ever swim the river near Great Falls. That is a very treacherous stretch of water.

There are entire trees underwater that will catch your foot and then the current will easily drag you downstream while your foot is caught thus dragging your head under. No way to escape.

In that case the child was at the water’s edge and was dragged into the water. There was no signage warning of gators. Very different. Disney made a ton of changes to their signs afterwards. (They were already quietly rehoming the alligators.) I remember it bc we stayed at the hotel where this occurred only a few weeks earlier.

Very sad but omg it is a wonder they all didn't die.

There are signs everywhere not to get in the water. Very sad.

So sad. I understand how it looks doable but the undercurrent is very strong in places and not easy to predict.

Really unfortunate. The river looks deceptively safe and inviting there but it is so dangerous.

So sad. My prayers are with the family.

My DD graduated from BCC HS with this young man. This is devastating and my heart aches for his family.
