Im one of those parents. Yes, it’s also growing in the DMV. No it’s not some war on wokeness or MAHA propaganda.

A lot of the newly homeschooled kids are neurodivergent or have severe anxiety. Programs that would have accommodated them in the past were eliminated or watered down with the final blow being COVID. There is no where to go if your kid needs smaller classrooms. Or support. Kids who are around grade level but neurodivergent really have nothing….

My kid is intellectually on grade level and has a robust iep due to other impairments.she received zero services in 3 years - and we lawyers involved….

Bullying on the playground, classes of 28 kids, overcrowded buildings. My kid developed severe anxiety. Started to be scared to go to school. Yes was put on meds. It didn’t help. Her therapist (outside school) would remind her she was safe. Then the next day would be an active shooter drill…and then some kid hit her and gave her friend a black eye on the playground. Because that kid had needs also and nowhere to go.

I remember once in first grade just after Covid she cried because she felt that all the adults were lying not her. She spend her formative years in lockdown wearing masks and all of a sudden she was being told “there’s nothing to worry about” as the whole class got sick. Yes, as an adult you think “suck it up, it’s life” but to an autistic 7 year old who had been told since age 4 that these evil germs will kill you - it’s gaslighting.

Eventually the school said they didn’t know what to do with her. If it was 10 years earlier they would have had an program,’but that got cut. And after years of stress we just had to pull her out.

And that’s the same story we are hearing in the local homeschool community. There just aren’t options.

In my work, I meet with a lot of parents who are trying to get their kids back into school after a period of homeschooling. I see both very good and very bad homeschooling programs. There's not a ton of in-between. Either it's a parent who is doing a great job where the public school was failing (this was especially true during COVID) or it's a parent who just didn't have time to deal with the school and took their kids out and said they were homeschooling to avoid truancy.

Racism and religion.

I have no issues with people who homeschool their children well. But the people I've seen (not in the DC area) do not. It's more about pulling the kids out of school than teaching them anything. They do not value education. I think these kids will be incredibly lost when they grow up. I also think it's a government psy op to make people dumber and easier to control.

In my case, active shooter and lockdown drills and actual occurrences were what made me decide to homeschool. One of my children has sn and the drills were affecting them. Opting out of the pressure of standardized tests, disruptive environments and crowded schools has made a huge difference for my dcs. One of my dcs is now a rising college sophomore and the other is dual enrolled and will graduate high school next year with an AA. For my family, homeschooling was superior to public school...and we are far from wealthy.

I am a homeschooling parent in the DC area and I never get homeschool related content on sm. In fact, I learn more about how homeschooling is perceived on this site than anywhere else. To be clear: we are secular, believe in Science, and our children learn through in person classes taught by teachers, online live and asynchronous classes (also taught by teachers) and self led learning.

They don't want their kids taught evolution, science, history, higher math. They teach religious doctrine. It is a psy ops effort backed by the government.

Personalized education appeals to a lot of people on both sides of the spectrum. Heaven forbid your kid be bored for like two minutes a day while the teacher helps another kid.

As a public school teacher, I have certainly thought about it. The behavior issues in a lot of schools are out of control.

People are lazy and would rather spend time having fun and having their kids have fun. Easier to get along with their kids. People want to spend time with their kids and homeschooling allows this. People are religious and want to indoctrinate their kids. People don't want to get up in the morning for school. People want to be friends with other homeschool families. People have money and are overconfident that their kids will be fine. AI is taking over thinking for People. People are noticing that kids are losing other skills because too much time spent on academics. People don't have academic skills themselves so they don't care if their kids do either. People notice that much of the world isn't very academic or they come from other countries where academics isn't valued. People notice that those who make money aren't the smartest. People think schools are too liberal and a bad influence. People are afraid of guns and weapons in schools.

The MAHA people don’t want their kids “indoctrinated” by wokeness. It’s also their own narcissism. They think they know better than everyone- doctors, scientists, teachers, etc.

I haven't noticed it around the DMV but there seems to be a huge rise in homeschooling among the people I went to school with and extended family in my hometown in the midwest. This is mostly in the suburbs of a medium city with very good school districts. A lot of them moved back to the area citing the good schools so this is surprising to me. My extended family isn't even actually homeschooling their children in any kind of formal way, they say the kids will learn what they need through osmosis. It's not happening because the nine year old does not know how to read at all. The homeschooling regulations in the state were relaxed and it doesn't seem like the kids need to be tested or keep up with certain curriculum or anything.

But what's behind it? Social media? A lot of these people are Republican/MAHA but why would these people want the kids not to learn? Easier to control an uneducated population? The elites don't want competition for their own kids? Just plain indoctrination?
