When I lived in LA in the early 2000's my roommate was an assistant to a well-established writer's agent and there was a bottomless pile of fantastic, interesting scripts in the apartment. I loved reading them. With a few notable exceptions, almost none that I read or even loved were made, and if they were they were changed/adapted to fit an established trend or proven territory.
It's not a lack of ideas, it's a desire by the money sources up-stream to protect their investment. XXX makes money so we'll make more XXX. Unfortunately, more of the same is rarely a good thing and too few people are interested in backing something not already proven.
