If top colleges accepted unlimited APs every kid would graduate in 3 years. Going to a school like this is a 4 year experience. Everyone doing everything together is part of it.

You can easily google the AP credit policies for HYPSM if you want to see the details.

Northwestern doesn’t let you get out of classes. You just get bumped up a level.

Some elite schools don't accept AP credit, period. Including Ivies and most of the WASP schools.

lol. People saying this is high standard obviously never attended a top college, or have a DC attending one.

Hardly. This is standard among T50 privates.

All top private colleges do this. They also cap the number of AP credits kids can transfer.

With few exceptions Swarthmore is the same. Many other schools are as well. Why is this a surprise?

I believe most Top20 do. And they restrict how many AP credits you can transfer. Many of them limit to 3-4 AP courses. So, parents whose kids took 15 APs will be disappointed. Only in state colleges, they can transfer all credits and graduate early.

When I went to Yale, APs only counted to place out of entry level classes but were not accepted as credits. That’s why I didn’t bother to take most of my APs (back in those days APs were only offered senior year as the schools expected you to take a baseline course in each subject and only take advanced once you had finished everything) because I looked to see which ones would have been useful. Most were not so why would I pay to take them?

You can use APs to "get out of classes" at public universities. At many selective private colleges they're used for placement, and they might help with admissions. On the optimistic side, students at those selective schools should be looking forward to their college classes, not looking to shorten their stay. And on the more pessimistic side, why would they admit a paying customer to their four-year school only to have them leave early?

Most people at Chicago choose it for the ranking. Hence the shock when they discover what they’ve signed up for.

UChicago only accepts AP5s for each exam, is this normal for T20 or is it the only school that is this strict? I think it says something about their rigor but kid was surprised you don't get out of much, used only for placement or elective credit with the 5. Does HYPSM do this??
