I think it will be fine. Algebra 1 in 6th is bonkers. My kid's AAP math teacher thinks it's bonkers. I'm not even allowing mine to do it in 7th.

As one parent at our center school put it "we are not going to unilaterally disarm" by not taking Algebra 1 in 6th. In our center school very few are opting out.

Quite frankly, the 90% of parents opting in are idiots and are trying to keep up with the Joneses.

There are a lot of parents opting out at haycock with high performing math-inclined kids, there are also a lot opting in. I’m not worried about other kids “surpassing” my child by opting out, and I feel very comfortable with the accelerated HS sequence that 7th grade A1H sets them up for. I don’t care to convince anyone else. I think the point is to feel confident doing whatever you think is best for your child bc they won’t be alone either way.

Or there are other schools where there is less pressure to be in AAP and hyper accelerate and fewer kids are taking A1H in 6th grade. Our local ES did not have enough kids to have an in person class so most of the people interested are not placing their kids in the class. There were enough kids to have an in person class but the vast majority said no.

I fully expect the schools were there is angst about AAP to be filled to the brim in A1H while the rest of the County has a different response.

Can you share which center school you're at? We are at Churchill and this is making me wonder what the % breakdown is there. How did you get that number at your school?

DC had very good map and sol score but I still opt out. I didn’t know the sol before made decision, even if I did I would do the same. It’s not right to skip 2 years math gap, the county just expect parents to take their own chances, and send their kids to outside school math classes if kids can’t keep up. We do what’s best for our kids. They will be learning pre algebra instead.
