FWIW, all of my DD’s rec teammates made jv or varsity at their FCPS schools.

Wow. At my daughter's FCPS school, there is both a JV and (large) varsity team and every single varsity girl plays travel, many on very high level teams, and almost everyone on JV also plays travel. I can only think of one that I do not believe plays travel.

Madison? WSHS? Other?

Madison.

McLean is like this too. I think Langley is similar too.

Yeah, there may be a few others but these are definitely the softball "haves" in Fairfax.

Then you have a school like, say Lewis. And everything in between.

My DD will be in MS in the fall, and has played a few years of rec and will continue to play rec. We looked into some of the travel teams, but it's too big of a commitment with other things we have going on, and far for practices. Not sure we can swing all that. Is softball like some of the other sports at FFX HS where the majority of the kids were on travel/club, ie, super competitive? Or is there a chance if you've only played rec?

You need to ask about the team dynamics. My kid has been out of HS a year and did not play softball. but had friends on the team. And the drama on that team was epic.

There are a lot of have and have-not schools in Loudoun, Fairfax, Arlington when it comes to HS softball.

It's highly correlated with demographics. Basically, wherever the UMC white girls live, those will be the hardest varsity squads to make. That's because softball is predominately a sport played by UMC white girls, whose parents have the disposable income for the team dues, expensive bats and equipment and lessons for specialty positions such as pitching.

Same at my DDs school (Arlington). It's very school specific.

OP here, thanks for the insight! This is very helpful to know. My oldest DD is trying out for volleyball there, and I know it's very competitive and not easy to make the team without club experience. Soccer seems to be similar. It's interesting that softball isn't quite as popular, but I guess good for us since there's a better chance to make the team without having to go through the travel route. Appreciate the feedback!

Since Fairfax HS didn't have a JV team this year (which was a surprise, by the way, and historically unprecedented so hopefully they will again soon), I personally know some rec-only girls - not even rec+ or all-stars - who made the varsity squad. I don't know if they would have been on varsity or JV in prior years, but definitely good enough to make one or the other.

AFAIK there are only a scant few schools in Fairfax County where a rec player can't at least make JV. They exist, but there aren't many.
