That's where the "get creative" comes into play. One could do a travel year and a home study year filled with experiences. I think you could explain it away. Maybe not for every level of school but there are plenty of schools that need butts in seats and if the gpa and test scores are good, even with a miscellaneous year, you'd get plenty of acceptances. The harder sell is how to get public school to take you back... I'm not sure but I'm am sure there is a work-around....

As soon as you get into "holding back" territory, it means you need to get your child evaluated instead for ADHD, anxiety, etc.

Holding back is not done in high school. It will look REALLY PROBLEMATIC on the transcripts you send to college. Holding back for a sport is the height of stupidity. No sport is worth the emotional and psychological burden of a child who knows they were held back (particularly in high school).

These days, US colleges really hold the students' hands when they come in as freshmen. Also, from now until they step into their dorm, they will mature A LOT.

So don't be stupid, OP.

I bet there are local gap year programs too. Will your private school assist with college apps after a gap year?

Do a PG year. I think there are local schools that may do it.

What is with these trolls?

I have a teen whose bday is in July. In hindsight, I should have held back a grade at earlier age but public school didn’t permit and we have been in a private school that is 5-12th grade. We are about to start 11th grade. What options do I have at this stage? They are just starting to grow and could also benefit from another year for their sport. I might be SOL and the idea of a postgrad year at a private prep school when tuition is same price as college doesn’t seem to make much sense plus they also want one more year of living at home. Any guidance?
