Rising 8th grader? They should use this time to develop their social/empathy skills. Best done by taking full advantage of the summer and doing what they want to be doing.

Harvard summer SAT prep. It is a bit more expensive but it is taught by Harvard faculty. We opted for it as their average SAT coming out of the program is 1560.

What is it your child is interested in? Start there. Look for camps in their area of interest. There are some great STEM camps in the area but they cover a variety of topics. There are specialized camps for art and music and sports. There are general sleep away camps.

Ask your kid what they want to do and let them do it. There is no need to prepare for 8th grade over the summer.

OK. communication and public speaking skills are really important! My son has gone to a public speaking program called Highest Speak I believe, for public speaking. It really helped him! He’s already great with Math so this was great to add!

OMG, no one is hiring your 13 year old for an internship. Parents are nuts these days. How about babysitting or mowing lawns?

Why are you preparing for HS when he still has a year of MS?

I have a rising 9th grader, shes doing 3 weeks of sports camps, a week at the beach, and some day trips and hanging out. There is nothing to " DO for HS just yet.

If they are interested go looking for STEM camps and activities. Mine choose 3 weeks of different sleep away camps and hanging out with friends. He is interested in joining cross country so he will run every day and then join the HS workout sessions that start in August.

Im, not OP but hes a rising 8th grader not 9th

OP Let him do what he wants. A couple of weeks of camp to break up the summer at least.

Hello All,

Looking for ideas for good summer activities for a rising 8th grader to help prepare for high school.

Trying to skip traditional summer camps.More like volunteering, coding projects, internships/shadowing, or other activities that build skills and experience.

What are some good options or “go-to” places in the NoVA/DC area for this age group?TIA.
