What’s stopping you from going to (checks notes), Chicago?

Hiking in Patagonia is on my list for our kids' freshman year. I want to go before I'm too old for camping and lots of miles.

If budget isn’t a concern, a safari (if you haven’t been) is worth exploring. If you love it, you can do it annually (or even more frequently!)

Also 2 weeks at a time is really generous. We could never take that! Enjoy.

I am favoring places that require good health and mobility now (like hiking in the Dolomites), since those trios might not be possible in my latter decades.

I’m have broken my explanation of Italy into multiple trips, since there is so much to see.

Also enjoyed discovering wonderful places that were not even on my Bingo card (like Slovenia!).

We do a lot of long weekends (no kids sports!). Been to Charleston, Minneapolis, Miami, Austin, Boston, etc. Also do ski trips without DCs (and some with) to VT, Utah, Wyoming, Idaho, CO. Next up is Napa Valley.

Internationally we’ve been to Italy and England several times, France, Scotland, Spain, South Africa. We mostly do these trips in the fall when it’s less crowded.

Over the past 2 empty next years, we have had wonderful week-long trips to Vancouver, Belgium, and Portugal. On the upcoming agenda, we are planning for Chile and Oregon.

I would do something your kid doesn’t want to do— whether that’s hiking or museums or just getting a place in some small town in Tuscany and doing day trips.

Know your muse. Really Op, you need to get-in-touch with yourself. Both of you do. I guess to start, when something sounds appealing to you, start a folder. Do your research.

On a side note, are there loved ones you want to see? (not necessarily need to see, want to see). Make a larger trip out of a stop in their area. Reconnect with old friends?

If one of your kids goes to school some place fun, consider getting an AirBnB there and do fun things there. Hang out with your kid when that seems logical, but don’t force it.

If your kids goes to school in boring places, book a flight to Rome. Spend a few nights in Rome, then a few nights each in AirBnBs in historic towns along a train route near Rome. Look at churches, ruins and museums in each town and eat amazing food.

We still go skiing every Thanksgiving and Christmas break with college-aged DC, but the rest of the year is wide open for ideas. Budget is not so much a concern, but time is—given the nature of our jobs, we can realistically can only take up to 2 weeks of vacation at a time. Thanks in advance for your suggestions!
