It's more than likely the poplar weevil which is currently infecting the area since we have so many poplar trees. They jump around and look very similar to ticks

I know three people with Lyme disease contacted in DC each over a decade ago. It can be worse in the grassy urban areas and suburbs than in very rural areas because more rodents.

Deer ticks are not only found on deers, but also other smaller mammals including field mice, squirrels and chipmunks.

You need to wear light colored pants, socks, shoes, full sleeve shirts etc... and pre-treat your clothes with bug spray.

OP here: I’ve lived in the core of urban DC since 2009. I’ve never once seen a tick on me. Literally never crossed my thought patterns because it wasn’t a “thing” in the city. And now im going to be checking my kids daily.

My family found three dog ticks crawling on us this afternoon. We were in Columbia heights, downtown, the mall, and SW. Not in the woods at all. We hike and camp so expect ticks from that, but this was surprising.

Plenty of ticks around. I pulled one off of myself this week.

Your premise is wrong. A tick inside an urban area that’s full of trees and forests and streams is not in fact rare. Georgetown in particular abuts national parkland where deer run around.

My kids were playing at Volta Park in Georgetown today and I noticed a tick crawling on my clothing. It was undoubtedly a deer tick. We were on the playground!

I’ve been seeing stories on IG that the tick count is already at a record number for the region, but ticks inside an urban area is pretty rare.

So if they are in the middle of urban Georgetown, they must be swarming places like RCP, Great Falls, the woods around upper NW DC, etc
