This is super popular. Ignore that the model is pulling it way down. My daughter wears it and it isn’t revealing.

This aerie shirt is really popular.

This FP shirt is all over the place, but it has been around a couple of years so it may not be as popular going forward. You will have to decide if you/she are comfortable with something backless like this.

Go to these sites and most items that are popular will say “going fast” or “102 sold in the last hour”, etc.

Be ready to brave the mall to return stuff.

+1 to FP, my DD has that top in 2 colors and wears a full coverage sports bra underneath.

She is definitely on the more athletic, conservative side -- she definitely doesn't like to wear crop-tops/more revealing items (which works out for us as parents too! ). We have gone to stores before, but she gets overwhelmed with all the options. Are there any specific pieces from either of these stores that are staples, so to speak that anyone can provide the link to? Her birthday is coming up and we would love to get a few items for her for the occasion. Thank you!

I’m the PP with the sporty daughter and below are some styles of tops that she has. She is fine with slightly cropped and the style that goes slightly off the shoulder:

I keep saying 12-year-olds in hoodies from Edikted, but don't know more about the brand.

DD and I did that around that age. It worked well but the biggest problem was because she has always been very petite we had to come home and order the smallest sizes online.

+1, take her to Tyson’s with a friend and let them shop. One of my DDs (14) is very petite and the smallest sizes at Hollister, Aerie and Altard State all fit her, but PP is right that you won’t always find the smallest size in stock at the store. What type of style is your DD interested in? One of my DDs is very sporty and not into anything low cut or too tight or too cropped but all of these stores have tops that she likes.

She is right. Start with Aerie and Hollister. You can find a good selection that won’t be too expensive and will be age appropriate for her.

Brandy Melville also has very plain T-shirts and simple tops. The brand is problematic in many ways with the quality is pretty good and they have some nice basics. It’s not cheap though.

I think Aritzia and Brandy Melville will be sexier than what she's looking for (Aritzia in particular skews older and the tops will look very sexy on a 12 year old), but otherwise this is right.

She is right -- Aerie and Hollister. Start there. If you hate shopping, give her a budget and let her peruse the website and pick out what she wants, but accept you might have to return or exchange things.

If she has a friend who she thinks would be helpful, you could also take her to the mall with that friend and let them shop and you can just hang out reading a book until it's time to pay. Again, give her a budget or a specific number of tops so she has limits.

My 12 year-old middle schooler is asking to update her wardrobe, specifically a few of her tops. She sees several girls at school all wearing similar tops she likes (she thinks from Aerie and Hollister?) however I have no idea where to begin to look and admittedly, do not love shopping. She is not interested in the tops that are super revealing and skin bearing. So reaching out here to see if others are willing to share what are your DD's favorite go-to tops these days??? Links are appreciated. Thank you SO much!
