I used to live out near Middleburg and it was a beautiful sky out there.

Deep creek or into West Virginia. The person I know who is a serious amateur astronomer has a cabin in West Virginia for this purpose.

I dunno, we wanted to see a meteor shower a few years ago, and Front Royal puts out a TON of light pollution. We were nowhere near it, but it was visible as a pale haze on the horizon, in the direction we were looking. Maybe would have been ok had we been north of the city, or had the shower been in the southern sky.

Charter a boat. Go 50 or 60 miles out. Look up. Turn around and come back to shore.

You should also look for satellites when stargazing. It's pretty cool to see them zipping along. You can tell it is a satellite because it kind of looks like a star moving in a straight line. (Flashing lights mean airplane!) If it's a clear night, you can usually see about 1 every few minutes.

You should download the Stellarium app. Great app for identifying stars and constellations. I’m out on my deck every night the sky is clear using it.

Pretty much anywhere you can camp. Big Meadows is amazing, but even Burke Lake or Prince William Forest have great star views at night compared with being in the city or suburbs.

Big Meadow along Skyline Drive in Shenandoah National Park.

I-66 West to Front Royal then south to enter the park. Modest fee per car to enter the park.

Highland county Virginia has some of the clearest skies for star gazing on the whole East coast. Just double check where you stay. Some vacation rentals are in bad locations like we stayed at the blue house in Monterey where the back yard faces a industrial work area with bright lights blaring all night. and valleys may fill with fog so sky clear in early night but then overcast. Mornings in such a valley are blissful though. And nearby are mountain peaks in WV that are also star gazing spots. There should be cabins for rent so you wouldn't have to drive on those pitch black mountain roads after sunset.

I know we aren’t getting spectacular night time star views around here. But can anyone suggest an affordable area reasonably close by to do an overnight if the goal is just to see some stars?
