Problem would be for kids whose families can’t afford it but won’t meet aid criteria.

Agree with PP that it can be especially life changing for kids who otherwise have never traveled anywhere quite different and wouldn’t have a chance in the near future.

I think as long as it’s not a gimmick involves good programming, both explicitly educational and otherwise, then good on the school for being able to raise funds for it.

I’m not familiar with what the trip is like for MV kids myself or what they do, to pass any judgements on whether it’s worth it.

Mixed feelings (as a non-MV parent) because while generally I think the focus should be on the day to day educational experience, I also know that trips like this can be genuinely life changing for some kids. I think there's room for this kind of thing, if you can make the finances work and make sure families who can't afford it can get funding. It can actually be especially meaningful for kids who may never otherwise travel outside the country, it can set them on a whole new path.

They do a lot of fundraising. Reduced lunch kids get a price of $1200 for PR. $3k for five days plus a recommended $500 in spending is nuts. There wasn’t much a price itemized list either

$1200 is way too much for FARMS families. Th school should subsidize more for them.

At MV, the school actually subsidizes all the kids a little bit but the majority of funds goes towards FARMS families and it’s free or few hundred.

Where does the money come from? It's a huge amount for a school to pony up (recognizing it's core to their program).

Oyster also offers Mandarin as a third language option in upper grades.

Almost all the kids go and it was an amazing experience for all. Yes it is free or greatly reduced for low income families.
