I agree, this doesn’t make sense at all. I pay into this for my nanny and she has never used the fund over four years. I certainly don’t pay enough in every year for her to be fully covered for a long leave but assumed that the calculation took that into account with the fact that most employees don’t use it regularly

It's possible they miscalculated what the payments into the fund should be and went way over budget.

This sounds like a reasonable hypothesis.

You mean we actually have to pay for all these policies the council passes?

How many paid sick days do you have? How much savings do you have, in the event of a catastrophic illness or injury?

Now pretend the answer to both those questions is 0. Do you still not think there's a reason for universal paid leave?

Cut universal paid leave. No good reason for it.

But it is funded by the companies on behalf of those employees.

I just received this email from the DC Fiscal Policy Institute- we are really going in the wrong direction if this passes. Please write to your Councilmember today to say that you do not support cutting paid leave. Take care all-

"DC Council is considering severe cuts to DC’s universal paid leave program, which enables non-government workers to take the time they need to care for themselves or a loved one. By gutting universal paid leave, lawmakers would hurt DC’s economy, small businesses, and workers, and exacerbate existing racial and gender economic and health disparities.

Mayor Bowser’s proposal to halt all new claims for medical and family leave for an entire year would harm DC workers who rely on these critical benefits to care for themselves or their loved ones when they experience a serious illness or injury. Cutting paid leave will also disproportionately harm DC’s Black and brown workers: Last year, nearly 65 percent of the workers who took medical or family leave in DC were Black or Latino. Contact your Councilmembers and urge them to keep DC’s universal paid leave program whole.
