Very heartwarming. Sometimes children don't realize how far they've come. You'll need to repeat the praise

Yup! I'm a former "resource room" teacher at private school. I had two students with very significant dyslexia. Both had private Wilson tutors twice a week who came to the school, and both students got pull-out reading support twice a week as well. One was three full grade levels behind in fourth grade in reading and writing. The other was doing significantly better, but only after several years of struggle. Both kiddos are now in college. One at an Ivy and one at a less esteemed college on a top scholarship and with a high SAT score.

It's really heartening to see how the sustained interventions, parental involvement, and unwavering support from teachers (who genuinely believed these kids were smart and capable) paid off.

Congratulations OP! DD sounds so much like your DC. She just graduated taking Honors English and AP Lit and is majoring in creative writing. I remember when writing two sentences was grueling!

Stay the course. These kids can do amusing things but it is difficult in the trenches.

Great job! There will be many more successes!

There are a bunch of DC teenage garage bands that are doing very well in the DC music scene. Most of the kids in the band met a the lab school.

One band is called 504 plan and always ask dyslexic kids/people in the audience to raise their hands. He says “we are a proud people”.

What wonderful news! Thank your child for their commitment and resilience, OP. Is she proud of herself? Does she realize what great strides she's made? Maybe a little celebration is in order...

My kid, who has 'moderate dyslexia' per a neuropsych, who was three years behind in reading in second grade when she came to us (remote school covid), just got 68th percentile in reading on MAP at the end of 7th grade!
She still struggles to decode multisyllabic words she doesn't know, but this score suggests she's actually reading on an 8th grade level now!

In i-Ready and MAP, she had gotten low 20th percentile scores for *years* (though had sometimes been getting into the 40s).

Math is still weak, and we probably need to direct some more attention there, but I am SO pleased with the work her tutor and special ed teacher have put in this year and SOOOO proud of her!

It's a marathon, not a sprint!
