Is it competitive? Is it a grind culture? Our tour was rather flat on academics, more look see / ooh aah to the campus & the fixation on the new building/ stem programs. Our DC might not even get in, given stats, but would like to know what the learning and study culture is like. TIA
If you think your kid’s stats might not be enough to get in, then the level of rigor is more than sufficient for them.

Anonymous wrote:W&M is a rigorous academic institution that seeks out curious and inquisitive students. It is not a cutthroat school and kids genuinely care about one another. Not a rah rah big sports school like UVA and Greek life exists but isn’t the be all end all type of thing like at some schools.
There will be W&M haters on DCUM as is the case for UVA as well. Better admit chances if you ED. Tougher admit for women than men.

In terms of incoming class, they're pretty equal, academically, as seen by the Common Data Sets. The most recent year we have both data sets is 2024–2025, where we see 25th/50th/75th percentile SAT scores for UVA of 1410 / 1470 / 1520, and the same scores for W&M of 1400 / 1470 / 1530. (That's with roughly 45% reporting for both schools.) So in that regards, they're pretty much dead even.
