Are you in a DCI feeder? You will not get into Spanish unless you are in a feeder.

OP here - yes.

This feels like hot BS. If you didn’t put dci as number one for feeder preference, you didn’t get in. If you live on Capitol Hill and are inbounds, you would know dci is pretty far away.

Write better fanfiction.

In SY24-25 there were:
21 MV Cook students who lived IB for JO Wilson
10 Yu Ying students who lived IB for JO Wilson
19 DCI students who lived IB for Stuart-Hobson

Op explicitly said commute time to Hobson is the same as dci. Which means she’s not inbounds for Stuart Hobson.

So you didn’t go to dci but feel you can opine on it?

If your kid is at a DCI feeder, did they do a shadow day at DCI? that would give them a good sense of how chaotic the school is.

There is more teacher turnover at DCI, but Stuart-Hobson has more of those really old-school teachers no one can ever get rid of.

It really depends on what makes your kid anxious. My anxious kid just powered through DCI middle school, but was a bundle of nerves and we struggled with truancy.

OP here. Where did you decide to go? It's so hard to know what to do! I am not totally opposed to moving, but it sounds like the most sought after schools in NW and near-in suburbs are enormous, which doesn't seem ideal.

If you're open to moving, have you tried looking at Hardy -> MacArthur? They are smaller schools, both are well-loved by parents, and they would keep you in the city. We're only just exploring middle & high schools now so I'm afraid I don't have lived experience - just what we know from the tours and scuttlebutt.

Given your specific kid, you might want to look at privates too. I know they can seem cost prohibitive, but financial aid is more common than you might think. Could be worth asking about this in the private school forum. We're looking at St Anselm's for my kid - parochial, small, very well-structured and non-stressful.

And of course you can take your chances on the lottery and try for Latin. It's a long shot, but it doesn't cost you anything to try, and it seems likes it smaller and more ordered than DCI.

NP

This is patently false and not how the lottery works. Assuming you don't get into the schools you rank above it, putting a school at #3 vs. #1 DOES NOT impact whether you get an offer there.

If you put:

#1: Deal
#2: Inspired Teaching
#3: DCI (with feeder preference)

And you get a meh number, you obviously won't get into Deal, and you won't get into ITDS, but you'll probably get into DCI. Your chances of getting into DCI with that same meh lottery number do not change if you just put DCI #1.

True order of preference, people. True order of preference.

My kiddo finished 8th grade at SHMS last year and is at Banneker. There is a solid cadre of good teachers and students, but there are disruptive students in some classes. There are new grade level admins this year so there may be some changes to how discipline is handled with regard to disruption.

I'm not familiar with DCI from a parent perspective so I can't speak to that experience.

OP here. Anyone with thoughts on the schools for this particular kid rather than random opinions on my post?
