+1. Especially in the spring there are dozens of games every week in rec; DD would be doing a bunch this weekend but for the rain. She gets $40/game.

Yes, at least where we live the higher levels are harder to staff so there’s availability. My kid often does double headers

Good money for a young teen.

+1 It's a good first job.

Softball is

Potomac Valley Officials Association in Loudoun County (pvoa.org).

Northern Virginia Softball Officials Association in Fairfax/Alexandria/Arlington/DC (they also have the private schools like National Cathedral School, Georgetown Day School, Potomac Schools, etc). NVSUA.org

If she signs up now, there will be some training in August and she can get started in the fall with rec ball and some travel (USA softball)

USSSA does different training. Reach out to State Director Eddie Small or Colin Clarke (UIC)

There are some girls umpiring. I worked with two 15-year-olds just last week in a USSSA tournament. Most of the umpires are men, but they're all very supportive of youth umpires, male and female. We need more female umpires in the girls' game -- it's good for the players to see.

Pay isn't bad for a teen. Rec ball is around $75 per game now for 90 minute NNI. Travel is $65 for 75 minutes NNI but you'll do four or five in a day and eight or nine on a weekend.

Thank you!

I just want to say that my son does this in Arlington and it is a great opportunity. He makes a lot of money. There is at least one female umpire for baseball as well.

DP, and I had no idea teens could do USSSA. The rec leagues hire teens for their 10U games. Or at least NVGSA and VGSL in Fairfax County do. Not sure about Loudoun.

Definitely agree that female umpires are good for the girls to see. My teen who umps has a professional she literally modeled her umping on because she loved the way the woman called the game so much.

Once you are trained through one, the other will also let you ump, generally. Then you can also sign up to ump the travel leagues like NVTBL (which pays more). We are in Arlington so I don't have the links for the Loudoun programs.
