I still don’t really have a sense of whether he did a good job or bad job.

Other than the specific timing- not after the mayoral election, not after the school year (this would be the best time to leave? Just a guess), no clear successor- it makes a lot of sense and isn’t that remarkable.

Because it real and effective changes begin, at best, 9-12 months from now, and that's only if the new mayor recruits and persuaded a talented strategist, manager, and leader.

So the future is still uninspiring.

Maybe they’ll hire someone who thinks kids should read books and write research papers and essays.

He started looking the minute Bowser decided not to run - besides the Police Chief, this is one of the mayor’s most important appointments. Ferebee knows that no matter who is elected, they’ll want to appoint their own Chancellor.

As for who will be interim, historically it has been one of the Deputy Chancellors or another senior leader. But Districts will often select a recently retired superintendents. And DC has plenty of former education officials and leaders.

Maybe he decided after that mayoral debate. Would rather leave in his own terms.

I’m surprised they didn’t give any sort of information about naming an interim. Especially considering the transition is happening at in less than a month.

Will the interim be internal or external?

The last transition was about a year long with an interim Chancellor.

What's the timeline on hiring a new Chancellor?
