That 50% could pull my kid down, so no they will want to put maximum effort in. So in a sense, this “grade boosting” project actually publishes the good kids who don’t need it.

I don’t understand this complaint. There are still several more weeks of school so it is natural that there are assignments.

That said, we really should just let out earlier because after tests are over. It does seem like a lot of make-work. The weather is too nice and it feels like school should be ending much sooner. Might as well start back in August since it is too hot to be outside and many kids are coming back for sports anyways.

Projects are actually really kind right now. They allow for flexibility.

My classes are typically operating at 50-70% attendance these days thanks to AP/IB/SOL/makeup testing and the excused absences the rest of the day on standardized test days. I am not doing projects (my classes don't align well with projects, we are still working through the last unit until final exam review begins) but that makes it really difficult for the absent kids to catch up with all the missed classes. Those kids have to teach themselves the missed material or arrange to come after school to get support, make up missed work, etc. I cannot excuse them from it; it's part of our curriculum and they have to be held accountable for it, but it's a lot to make up. The kids have actually been asking for projects, because then it is easy to work on them when they are present and catch up from home if they miss too many days.

Not true.

Teachers need to give adequate time for retakes, late work, kids missing class for SOLs or EOY testing, and other end-of-year tasks.

No teacher is "coasting" at the end of the year. They are desperately trying to get work from kids, give kids an opportunity to retake low assessments, etc.

You should be kissing their feet right now, not unjustly accusing them of taking the easy way out.

If there aren't grades, the kids don't engage and are behavior issues. (I know, i know, not YOUR kid...but the vast majority of high school students only participate if there is a grade attached to work).

There is still 4 weeks of school. You can argue the last week should be easy, but not the last month.

My high schooler has now been slapped with 2 bs projects to take them through the end of the year. Why can’t they give these kids a break? Just do short lessons and discussions with minimal work. So annoyed! So now he has to use his Memorial Day weekend to work on the ridiculous projects.
