I had a similar situation recently but flying from England. I received nearly $2000 compensation. It was an easy process. But in doing so I learned that US laws are wildly less friendly to flyers than in Europe. And that if the flight hadn't originated from London I may not have gotten anything. Also the airline reps knew absolutely nothing in any airport. You have to talk to corporate. You may receive something it is worth trying because so many passengers dont try.

That's not what Federal law and regulations say. It says you are entitled to a refund, anything more than that is at the airlines choice/discretion.

Domestic flights are rebooked and sometimes a hotel/meal voucher depending on why the flight was delayed/cancelled.

If you have status they may throw some miles at you.

I was to fly from LA to Dulles last night at 6 pm west coast time.

It was delayed until 7:30pm, then 8:00pm, then 9:00pm, then cancelled at 10:30pm. American gave me a voucher for a flea bag Super 8 which I accepted given the hour. They promised to rebook all of us on a 7:00 am today, which they honored.

But, on the flight today, everyone was telling me I'm entitled to a future free ticket, complete refund of the cost of the one that got cancelled, and $400 cash.

I talked to the gate agent at Dulles when I landed and she told me I was entitled to absolutely nothing and was actually rather aggresive and rude about it all.

Googling tells me she was 100% lying.

How do I :

1. Get what is owed to me, and,
2. How is it legal for American to tell their employees to lie to customers?
