Second these. The science version especially came in handy for the 8th grade SOL.

I asked the math specialist at my APS MS for an algebra textbook to borrow for the year for my 7th grader, and she gladly gave me one. You may want to try this as an option depending on the subject.

I posted above. The books we got were “everything middle school (science, English, math etc).” They’ve been pretty good with covering what APS does. APS teaches US history in 6th, civics & Econ in 7th, and world geography in 8th.

Maybe a silly question — but how did you know what book to buy? I have no insight into what my elementary age kids are using, and we’re looking ahead to 6th grade.

We did this all the time for math and science classes. We could usually find the same textbook on ebay. Often times it was an older edition but similar enough.

When my kids were in APS elementary and middle school the textbooks were online and impossible to use. I would buy the physical copies of the same textbooks online (perhaps one edition out of date) and the used copies were often from FCPS! I found it incredibly helpful and not very expensive.

Yes, for reading and history.

For US history in elementary, we bought “A History of US” by Joy Hakim. As with any textbook series, there are some errata. A notable issue is that the textbook does not credit Switzerland or Iceland has having representative governments (without kings) before the start of the USA. It covers both the good and the bad of US History, so fine on that score.

we bought some things from Rainbow Resource, which is mostly a homeschool supply firm. They have a wide range of curricula, both religious and secular. Many curricula they offer are also used by various public school districts around the country. Their curricula / textbook series comparison guides are very helpful.

i'm specifically interested in textbooks as a resource for APS 6th grade (immersion track if that matters). I appreciate it's not going to necessarily map 1-1 to the curriculum but i'm trying to figure out if i can find a pretty good textbook for the subjects in the APS curriculum and purchase them on the used market to use as a resource/reinforcement at home. I'm very interested in helping to scaffold with a non-digital resource. Has anyone figured this out/done something similar and have any advice on which textbooks seem to work?
