Out here in CA, I appreciate our UCs, but I wouldn't pay OOS for any large public over a private. If your kid can get into these schools OOS, surely there is a more attentive private alternative.

UMich and Cal are worth oos for Eng/CS, but not UNC or UVA. So, it depends on your major.

UNC is pretty cheap out of state when you consider Penn State and VT have higher OOS tuition

Michigan is worth it if your kid is in the top 20% at Ross, Engineering or Ford and gets a $75,000+ job at graduation.

For engineering at Berkeley or Michigan, yes. Otherwise, you're probably objectively overpaying--but whether it's still "worth it" to you is a personal question.

Worth it relative to a much cheaper in state option? No, not worth it. Worth it relative to full pay at privates? Depends on major.
The better question now is does any undergraduate degree make sense relative to ROI. Debatable.

Crazy town, 85k average now for most, UNC is low 70s. Hard to believe it would be worth it but I guess they cater to rich people.
