I just had a long talk with a Venezuelan cabbie (in Spanish) in Florida. He was pretty upset because he said absolutely nothing has changed — the economy and shortages and crime is still just as bad. He said all his friends were out on the street cheering when Marduro was arrested, and do what — nothing changed.

I assume the flights are to allow U.S. businesses to take advantage of whatever Trump negotiated to his donors with respect to oil. I feel so bad for Venezuelans — they’ve had such a rough road for so long and this likely will not improve the situation.

Check out the State Dept guidance. https://travel.state.gov/en/international-travel/travel-advisories/venezuela.html#local

I'm pretty adventurous and can see the allure, but I wouldn't go yet. The country is still in an economic crisis, which is a recipe for crime, particularly against tourists. *Maybe a bit safer if you speak fluent Spanish, so you're more attune to what's happening around you?

American and United both started flights to Caracas, so is Venezuela now safe to travel?
