OP here. I don’t know that’s why I am puzzled. Maybe out of boredom? Maybe because being so far we can keep in touch without getting close?

I would think being sick is really boring and they're bored. Or that they have something from the past that they want to get off their chest. Or it's a scam.

I was contacted recently through social media by an acquaintance that I did not see for about twenty years and lives now thousand of miles away; very polite and kind interaction. I was a bit puzzled so I asked somebody who is a common friend what is going on. Apparently the person is really sick (very advanced cancer, likely close to getting hospice care). I am so puzzled. How would you handle the interaction? For now I am just pretending not to know what the common friend said and keeping the conversation open
