OP here. I don’t know that’s why I am puzzled. Maybe out of boredom? Maybe because being so far we can keep in touch without getting close?

I would just be nice to that person and ask them about their life, family, etc. and go from there.

OP here. It is not a scam. I know personally both people. The person that now is sick lived close to my parents when we were growing up

I was contacted recently through social media by an acquaintance that I did not see for about twenty years and lives now thousand of miles away; very polite and kind interaction. I was a bit puzzled so I asked somebody who is a common friend what is going on. Apparently the person is really sick (very advanced cancer, likely close to getting hospice care). I am so puzzled. How would you handle the interaction? For now I am just pretending not to know what the common friend said and keeping the conversation open
