While I’m sure this happens, it’s rare for a kid with what it takes to get into UVA to just completely give up senior year. How are they going to get through the following 4 years if they can’t even manage 12th grade?

Dean J had a Thursday afternoon instagram about this last year - they are unlikely to rescind but would likely have some frank conversations with student about what's going on. Her comment was something like: high school is JV fun but at UVA it's varsity level fun. So if you're unable to manage JV level fun with school, we will be very concerned that you won't be able to manage at UVA.

Immediate PP here: I mean, you literally have withdrawn all of your other college applications if you got into UVA ED.

If they rescind for Bs and Cs, they are condeming the kid to not being able to attend college at all next year.

If they start rescinding ED offers then kids should feel free to start breaking their ED commitments.

Unlikely to get rescinded with Bs and Cs. However, student may get a email/phone call from the school to ask what is going on and a warning about being ready for the rigor of college. More of a scare tactic but it does happen and they do expect an explanation - some will threaten the student with starting on "probation". Also, and this is really important: A kid that chooses to slack off (not like they got overwhelmed and it just happened but one that deliberately chooses not to work as hard) is likely not going to be able to easily pick back up once they do arrive at college (and there are a lot more distractions on campus than living at home) and will likely struggle to manage time and expectations in their freshman year. It's a slippery slope and not the choice of an intentional mature student who would succeed at a highly selective elite institution amongst a class of high achievers.

+1 If there is a dramatic drop-off (not just one C) might get an inquiry.

Assuming this is true, do colleges actually rescind offers after a senior year with Bs and Cs or is this just urban legend?

You really need to tank to get your offer rescinded. Like Fs and Ds. Even one D is unlikely to cause that to happen.

Most of the kids I know who had great GPAs heading into senior year wanted to maintain them through senior year, just as a matter of pride if nothing else.

This. A body in motion tends to stay in motion. It's actually unusual for a straight or mostly A kid to end with Cs.

High schools send one last set of grades around January/February, then as long as all remaining classes are passed, rescinding doesn't happen.

They don’t look at senior year grades for EA, either.

They do not rescind... your kid is right.

Rarely, if ever, happens. Especially with UVA. You'd have to get all D's.
