Assume the anxiety is college driven. The FB group "college admissions advice for awesomely average kids" is a great forum to see that it is nowhere near the end of the world, people often post stats / end results and lots of good outcomes.

I'm a parent to a 10th grader who school comes easily for AND an 8th grader who will probably have to struggle for that C. In talking to my older DC they mentioned a classmate who had at least one C (maybe even a D) who had a state option that I assumed would be an automatic "No"

It proves that she has not mastered the subject. Sorry, OP, it's not good, especially as the C comes with multiple Bs.

I know a full pay international kid from MCPS who got into Ohio State with those stats, so not all is lost, but I think you need to be willing to pay full price and go out of state.

OMG! Really, I thought everyone here on DCUMOM only had straight As in all subjects!

Is this a troll post? A 'C' really?

-Just teasing, it's fine. Chemistry is tough. I couldn't pass Chemistry 101 in college, then I took chemistry for non-science majors and got an A. -The world goes on!

Relax. The world goes on.

What was his major and does he have a job for after graduation?

Science isn’t her strong suit. She obviously shouldn’t go into a stem career. It’s fine.

My daughter got into her first choice with several Cs and lots of Bs. It's not a top 50, but it's perfect for what she wants. There are thousands of schools -- one of them will be a good fit.

Not every kid deserves an A or a B.

Top 20 schools won’t happen- but I doubt that is her goal anyhow. They are man, many schools she will get into with mostly Bs and a couple Cs (she will likely get another in physics, if she takes).

This would be her only C, but she gets a lot of B's. MCPS if that matters.

Does she need chemistry for what she’s planning on majoring? She’ll find plenty of quality colleges to attend if that’s your worry.

It depends what her/your goals are. But it's all relative. Many people here would say having Bs is a a problem and some parents are unhappy with anything less than a solid A. And lots of others are looking for their kids to simply graduate.

As a parent, I think you also need to step back and hopefully your own anxiety over her grades will diminsh as well. Unless you suspect she's got a undiagnosed learning issue, it sounds like she's a good kid doing her best. If she's getting tutoring and talking to her teachers, then she's doing everything she can.

DD (sophomore) got a C last semester in on-level chemistry, and although we got her a tutor, it's looking like this semester will be the same. She seems unhappy with this outcome but not as desperate to avoid it as I'd hope. If worst does come to worst and she gets a C, how important will this be? C, both semesters, same class?
