I fertilize mine when it's not blooming. It grows really well as a result, I assume.

I have an orchid that grew aerial roots than sound like that after it was done flowering. Because orchids are epiphytes, they will do this. Normal and healthy. I didn’t repot it - it kept it in the nursery pot with lots and lots of holes for good drainage. I feed it orchid food when I water it and this year I have 15 flowers. I suggest you google aerial roots and see if that is what you are seeing.

Where are you located, OP? Many independent garden centers will repot your orchid for a reasonable fee. Good Earth in Potomac does this, I’m sure American Plant will too.

I have an orchid that is growing what I thought was a new flower spike but now I think perhaps are new roots. I've had it for over a year and am not sure what kind it is as it came from the grocery store. Maybe a moth orchid based on pictures. It has done well, flowered for a long time, then grew several new leaves but now is growing these spiky like things toward the base of the plant. There are now about 5 spiky things. Are these new roots? Does this mean I need to repot it? How do I do that successfully as every time I have repotted any kind of plant in the past it quickly died after repotting?
