The Warhawks were pay to play too…

Seriously? The 1999 warhawks produced Abe Thompson and Clarence Goodson, both of whom played professionally (didn’t Clarence also make the world cup roster one year??) , not to mention about every other guy on that team playing d1 after graduation. I wouldn’t call them pay-to-play. Abe Thompson didn’t need to bribe anyone to let him on their team in the late 90s.

“Pay to play” means they had to pay fees and their coach.

Bribing? What are you talking about?

I’m embarrassed that I googled this and couldn’t figure out the joke (other than knowing about Al Bundys touchdowns)

Yeah those two guys torched me back in the day. Abe’s injuries at UMD were unfortunate. Clarence had a nice run though.

Our high school year book, on the boys soccer page, said something along the lines of “team strategy- pass the ball to Abe”. lol. Funny in retrospect given that Clarence had the more dominant career but man, they were both a treasure to watch on the pitch.

$300 plus tournaments is hardly comparable to today. You are the first person I've heard argue that the system was pay to play ie in the same context as today's system. Please share articles that indicates 2001 = to today. Or are you just being argumentative to say that we had to pay something and thus pay to play? Sigh

Articles about pay to play from 2001? What are you on?

I even remember the team name. Warhawks. lol.

Around Braddock Road area, the strongest boys program is SYC. People outside the club dislike them but they consistently put out the strongest boys teams and are highly competitive. A bit farther out you can go to Arlington and maybe Alexandria for the U12 and U13 ages. SYC and Alexandria are part of MLSN and Arlington is ECNL. Higher level in the "pyramid" is DC United.

A lot has changed since then. In their case, a whole lot. It depends on age and what you are looking for.
